Simple Tips on How to Write a Great Essay

There are many different types of essays, but no matter what assignment you get from your tutor, there are general rules following which will help you create a great piece of writing. Check out our list of important things to consider, in order to get good results and become confident in your writing skills.

1. Choose a Suitable Topic

  • If you have an opportunity to choose a subject for your essay, do so. The more you are interested in the theme of your paper, the better your essay will be.
  • If the assignment was given to you by your tutor and you do not like the topic of the discussion, try to find some element which can still motivate you. For example, if you need to write about something boring, take it as a challenge and do the task. You will be proud of yourself for completing a seemingly impossible assignment. Realizing that you are capable of overcoming such obstacle as writing an essay on a boring topic can be really motivating.

2. Try to Start as Soon as You Can

All assignments have the deadline and all have penalties if the work was not submitted on time. We all know how busy student life can be, so doing everything on time will help you avoid stressful situations if for some reason you miss the deadline. Putting off working on an important essay is not the best idea, so make sure you start crafting your paper well in advance.

3. Prepare Well Before You Start Writing

  • Do the research and study your subject thoroughly.
  • Make sure you fully understand your tutor’s instructions
  • Use freewriting or brainstorming techniques
  • Create a preliminary outline (you might adjust it later in the process of writing)

4. Follow the Structure

Different types of essays require different types of structure. However, if your tutor did not specify how your particular essay needs to be formed, the most common way of organizing is the following:

  • Introduction. This paragraph must be intriguing enough for the reader to want to read your work further. It must be short and concise, without giving out all the details though. The main purpose of the introduction is to catch reader’s attention.
  • The body of an essay. This is usually the biggest part of the text and may consist of several paragraphs. Here you will have a chance to elaborate on the subject and express your reflections.
  • Conclusion. The purpose of a concluding paragraph is to summarize all the points which were discussed and highlighted in the previous paragraphs. Similarly to the introduction, it must be short and strictly to the point. Depending on a type of an essay, you may bluntly state the conclusion which you came up with or you can include some ambiguity and leave readers food for thought.

5. Proofreading and Editing

Many students skip this stage which results in getting not so good grades. Make sure that you check your text for spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax errors. No matter how interesting your essay is, if it is full of mistakes, your work might not be accepted. If you are not sure, ask someone else to look through your work.

We have listed the number of aspects which are quite simple but they can make a lot of difference. Follow our guidelines and be proud of a remarkable essay which you came up with.
