5 tips to help your students find a good book

Being a teacher doesn’t mean that you should only teach your subject and that`s it. You are also responsible for students` improvement in everything. You should help your students learn useful information necessary in everyday life.

Writing and reading are two essential things, which every student should practice in. Reading helps open the world around while writing allows depicting own thoughts and ideas. Teachers` aim is to encourage every student to fall in love with these two activities.

There`s a period when students read books to learn, and this means they start to see for some particular books. That`s when teachers should give them a hand. Books should assist students to understand the world around them better, so it`s a great task for every teacher to find an appropriate book.

It`s obvious, you work with students of all ages, some of them may look for encouraging books, while younger want to read something for entertainment. The following advice will help you in any case.

Know much about a student

First of all, you are to know students` background, preferences, and dislikes, what they have already read and liked most of all. Depending on this information, you can make up a list of three or four books, which you can suggest to your students. This approach is one of the most efficient ones, as students have the right to decide on their own among the offered books.

Make experiments

You should encourage students to experiment with genres. For instance, if they are keen on fantasy, offer a biography or drama. You are to tell them a good example of genre switching and its good influence, persuade students they may read various genres and enjoy every single book.

Exposure

You are to show students books which they can read. It costs you nothing to make a small display of five or six books in front of your classroom, but students will have a chance to choose the book to read. This is much easier to make a decision among 5-6 books if compared to hundreds on the library shelves.
Moreover, you can invite a student, who has already read one of the displayed books to share own thoughts on it. This will make students more interested in reading and getting to know the plot better. In addition, you can cite the most inspiring paragraphs of the books.

The right to abandon the book

Your students should know they can abandon a book if they don`t feel like reading it. They shouldn`t be afraid to disappoint you, as this is okay when they don`t like a book after some pages. When they feel a freedom of movement, they are more open and ready for new experiments.

Give enough time

You know how difficult it may be to find that book. You are to give your students enough time to make their mind on a book choice. Let them look through the covers, read summaries and decide. In addition, you can provide them with the list of books you offer.

You should also provide your students with enough time to read books, still, it`s not easy with the modern studying standards. Teach your students to love reading and enjoy every book they get, help them choose those books, which can positively influence their behavior and outlook.
